Smoke Alarm Information
Smoke alarms save lives full stop. In fact the truth is you are twice as
likely to die in a house fire that has no smoke alarms than
in one that does have them.
Smoke alarms are basically self contained units
that have different ways of detecting fires and when they do detect one they
sound a load audible warning.
They are usually fixed to the ceiling in
accordance with building regulations that specify the correct types of smoke
alarm and positioning.
What Are The Different Types Of Smoke Alarms?
There are basically 3 different types of alarms that include:
Ionisation Smoke Alarms
They are generally the least expensive and are sensitive to smoke particles created by flaming fires.
Optical Smoke Alarms
These alarms detect larger particles of smoke and basically works by sensing a disruption to a beam of light in the device which then sets off the alarm.
Heat Alarms
The heat alarms are used in situations where there may be smoke particles or dust in the air as normal and thus the other alarm types would be set off unnecessarily.
Smoke alarms are generally mains powered but in situations where this is not possible battery operated smoke alarms are available.
In many situations smoke alarms are interlinked so that if one goes off then they all do so everyone in the building is notified and able to get to safety fast.
