Ionisation Smoke Alarm Information

These types of smoke alarms are particularly sensitive to tiny particles of smoke that are generated by fast clean burning flaming fires.

Ionisation smoke alarms work by basically having a small radioactive element inside them that ionises the air within a chamber.

When the small current that is created inside is disturbed by smoke it sets off the alarm.

Ionisation smoke alarms are less vulnerable to raise a false alarm in areas with dense tobacco smoke or dust.

The BS 5839: Pt6: 2004 standard suggests that ionisation alarms should not be used in areas such as hallways and landings where there is a risk of cooking fumes setting them off.
